Reflective Practitioner

Task 1

Action plan

I will be using the time tables for my visual action plans, they will provide me with what modules I will need to complete each week, and give me areas that I am weak in, time to strengthen them and build a structure in a timescale that will span over the first year of the FDA course.

It will enable me to keep to a weekly work progression study programme for me to follow and to assist me to know what deadlines I will have to achieve, and will remind me of what I need to relay on my blog.

It will also assist in my time management to a more effect progression in semesters A&B.

My Action Plan for completing all Modules prior to submission

To ensure all blog work is near/ and or completed 3 weeks before deadlines. check all modules.
To snag or alter any modules that are not to a satisfactory level.
To ensure prints are printed before module deadlines. to a required quality specification, also to try a couple of options for best prints at this stage, since the University is no longer an option.
To check all final work in all modules before submission for errors, and or mistakes.
To ensure all work submitted is in the right required structure set out by the course tutors.
To ensure that the tutors have the correct blog address. Check this out prior to submission via an external source.

Deadlines for end of Academic Year 2016 to 2017

All FdA Students (Yrs 1 & 2) must present work to staff in the allocated room and sign the submission sheet. Please ensure you bring you work to the correct room and within the times indicated; the room will be locked at the end time exactly. Another person may submit your work if you are unable to attend.

For blog based submissions, please submit an A4 sheet with your name, the module title and the blog address and blog page that is being assessed, neatly written.

College guidelines stipulate that staff are allowed up to three weeks after submission before feedback should be released. Feedback may be written or verbal. There is no feedback requirement for the BA (Hons), Dissertation and Final Integrated Assignment modules.

Task 2

Pecha Kucha Presentation.

We have been asked to show a Pecha Kucha presentation on why I want to study Photography. we had 20 images to show with 20 seconds spent on each image to describe the image, or to in corporate it into the slide show. We could either present it on our own or split the images with another student. I was asked by another student if we could share, so I did 10 images. I was very nervous and I rushed the speaking side a little bit, I have never used power point or done a presentation before. here are my 10 images with a little bit more of a brief description with each image.

Image/slide 1 - Once Upon a Time .

This was one of the first images that got me back into photography. I had a fall and received a bang to the head. I had a hairline fracture just behind my nose, which caused me to have a CSF leak ( Cerebral spinal fluid). I was off work for 2 month, and I was getting a bit fed up, as I live to keep myself busy, so I decided to try re fashioning furniture, "Shabby chic style" This is one of the first pieces I did, I tried to take photographs but they wasn't very good, so I asked my brother, Michael to take some for me.  but I really wanted to take my own.

Image/slide 2 - My Siblings, My younger brother Michael, on the left and my younger sister Julie on the right.

My brother Michael had been to study photography, at the university first, he passed the degree course and got a BA Honour 1st. We used to hear about all kinds of projects and ideas. Then a couple of years later My sister went to the same University, she is in year 2 at this present time, they did try to get me to go but I was too busy with my own life, how ever I did ask a lot of questions.

Image/slide 3 - Family outings -

Because I was the only one who has a car, and could drive, I was like the taxi driver, we used to go out on shoots as a family. I had my own little Olympus camera. I would follow them about, and snap at anything, and everything. They used to say" slow down, think about the images you are taking," "look at things from a different angle" they talked about F stops, ISO settings and Apertures..... I thought an Aperture was a something you get in a restaurant as a starter !!! only kidding. So in a way I wanted to know more, gain more knowledge, These outings " re- lit my fire " so to speak, as I have always loved photographs.

 Image/slide 4 - Paul Hill, Photographer and Faye Godwin, Photographer - Friends in the Field of photography.

My siblings used to talk about these photographers, as well as others. I didn't know who they where or what their genre's where. My brother used to say that some of my images had the look or style to Faye Godwin, or that they was a bit Paul Hill looking, or feel to them. I did go and research them   via the internet.

Image1 - Faye Godwin- photographer

Image 2 - Andrea Holt - photographer.

(Image/slide 5 - Compare and comparison)

Image 2 is an image I took at Inglebrorough lake in Clapham. On a family outing. I didn't know at the time of Faye Godwin. I loved the reflection of the bare trees in the water, I loved how the shadows cascaded over the waters surface, you could still see the rocks under the water. After a bit of research I spotted this image by Faye Godwin,  (Image 1) and thought it looked similar in form to my image, I like how she portrait's her images, how the reflection of the skeletal like tree branches fall on the waters surface.

Image/slide 6 - The Eye -

A lot of people used to say I had "The Eye" for photography, and that I should study it a bit. My Siblings, especially my sister used to say "Come to Uni with me" but I thought I was too old and that I had a full time job, where would I find the time, and so on. I did take this image myself, and it is my own eye, with the reflection of the camera, and my bathroom captured within the eye.

Image/slide 7 - " Crisp enough"

I used to get frustrated and felt that my photographs were not good, or blurred not as crisp as my siblings, again they talked about what settings I was using, I didn't really understand the technical side of it, so I used to practise taking images around the house. This image shows my Shallow depth of field practise.

Image/slide 8 - Blackburn University-

This image I took out side the university building. When I turned 50 I had decided to change my life and live for the moment, I wanted to focus more on my images, to understand what I was doing. I made a decision,  that will hopefully change my life. I still didn't think I was good enough so went for an interview, with my portfolio  images on my note book, sucked in a very deep breath and went to see the tutors about coming on to the university degree course...... Excited !!

Image/slide 9 - Fun guys

My sister and brother had said that the tutors where fun guys, great teachers, full of photography skills and knowledge, and that this was the place to gain knowledge and understanding of the history, technical and development. I also thought, well anything they can do, I can do better, and if I couldn't beat them at least I could join them, and learn.

Image/slide 10 - Educating Andrea -

So here I am, Now at Blackburn University, on a 3 year FDA/BA honours degree course, educating myself in Photography, or should I say the tutors are educating me, passing on to me their skills, knowledge and technics, filling my brains ( The image on the left, is one that caught my eye in Blackburn Town centre) to the full, of F stops, ISOs and Apertures, shallow depths of field, Hyperfocal distance and much more.  I'm a keen learner, And yes, it may take me a little longer than some of the other students, Yes, I do forget things quicker than I used too, and I do have a lot to learn.... but I will get there, in the end...... I am determined.

I hope you have enjoyed my 10 images and discussion on why I wanted to study Photography.

Dear Mr Joe Blog.

I read with great interest your posting for a freelancer photographer representing The Joe Blog Photography Company. I believe that my 3 years of photography experience and my current learning of new technical skills make me a strong candidate for this position.

I have worked as a freelancer photographer for the past three years, first as a photographer’s assistant and then as an associate photographer. I am skilled at estimating costs and developing a budget with clients. Clients have praised me for my ability to photograph efficiently and effectively while maintaining poise and enthusiasm. I bring this skill and professional demeanour to every photo shoot.

You specify that you need a photographer with current knowledge of the latest photographic trends and technology. I am currently studying a FDA, BA Honours degree in photography at Blackburn university. I am up-to-date with current photographic trends. I have also had some practical training in workshops with Paul Hill -photographer and Maria Falconer-photographer. I have some knowledge in Light -room and I am exploring the concepts of photo shop.

In my classes, I have also learned the latest photographic technologies, ranging from darkroom techniques, in B&W and Colour processing of film. Studio work based lighting to location lighting. These skills are expanding on a week to week basis.

I believe my experience, and ongoing University learning with up-to-date skills make me an ideal candidate for the position of photographer at The Joe Blog Photography Company. I have attached my resume for your review.

I will call you within the week to discuss the position further. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

Miss Andrea Holt

Task 3

Swot Analyse of 3 images which form part of the Research Methods - Portfolio Module.

Un Edited versions

Image 1 - camera settings, Nikon D5300 -DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40 mm 12.8 G lens.   ISO 100 40m F5.6 1/60 Sec Normal, Un edited version- Lily Project - This image is a lily petal that I screwed up then laid out. with this image I had been taking photographs of the flower petals close up using natural light from my kitchen window. The composition is very close, almost a macro image, I wanted to see what the flower petal would look like if I squashed it up, I wanted to see how the crinkles in the petal would look like for a different contrast. It gives the petal, which is normally a soft smooth surface the appearance of being old, or aged, jagged lines and a rough texture.

Aesthetics
The composition works well in this image as it is quite close, almost macro. The detail,  and textures
of the petal can be seen quite clearly enhancing the images overall look. The image is a horizontal image, but would work just as well as a vertical image, due to the subject matter.The image was shot using natural light . The image has been shot in colour and edited to B&W for a compare and comparison image.
Strengths
Aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Good composition of image. Close/fine detail in focus. Can not tell what the subject matter is.

Weaknesses
The image has a blue tinge to the image. The lighting could have been a little bit brighter. Its not clear what the subject matter is.
Improvements required
If I was to take this image again I would add another light source, possibly a flash or a strobe light to skim over the surface of the petal. Or I would light up the petal from underneath to give the petal a lighter even surface. I would use a softbox to soften the lighting.
Technical
Nikon D5300 -DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40 mm 12.8 G lens.   ISO 100 40m F5.6 1/60 Sec Normal, handheld no tripod. Natural light, no other lighting used
Strengths
Good entry based DSLR camera, with a good close up range lens used. this allows for closer shots being taken of the image to bring out and refine the detail of the petal, also good for achieving a better shallow depth of field.
Weaknesses
You do not see all of the image in view as it is not a full frame camera. The image is only sharp in certain areas of the photograph.
Improvements required
if I was to shoot this image again I would set my camera setting to ISO 100, for less grain in the shot .40mm focal range, F8, I would use a smaller aperture and change my shutter speed to slow down and control how much light comes into the camera around 1/10 sec to start with.

Image 2 - camera settings, Nikon D5300 -DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40 mm 12.8 G lens ISO 2500 38m F5.6 1/125 Sec Normal. -  Lily project - In this image, which again I shot using natural light, and continuous ambient light.

Strengths
Aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Good composition of image. Close/fine detail in focus.
Weaknesses
The lighting could have been a little bit brighter, which would have enhanced the contrast of the petal, and lit up the darker areas. Its not clear what the subject matter is.
Improvements required
If I was to take this image again I would add another light source, possibly a flash or a strobe light to skim over the surface of the petal. Or I would light up the petal from above, emitting light down on top of the petal. I would use a softbox to soften the lighting.
Technical
Nikon D5300 -DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40 mm 12.8 G lens.  ISO 2500 38m F5.6 1/125 Sec Normal.  handheld no tripod. Natural light, no other lighting used

Weaknesses
You do not see all of the image in view as it is not a full frame camera. The image is only sharp in certain areas of the photograph. the image is a little bit grainy due to the high ISO setting because the lighting had changed because it was natural light, which is subject to change at every shot.
Improvements required
if I was to shoot this image again I would set my camera setting to ISO 100, for less grain in the shot .40mm focal range, F8, I would use a smaller aperture and change my shutter speed to slow down and control how much light comes into the camera around 1/10 sec to start with. I would also use a tripod.

Image 3 - camera settings, Nikon D5300 -DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40 mm 12.8 G lens ISO 100 40mm F3.2 1/60 Sec - un edited version - Lily Project. This is an image that I have come back to and reshot, as I loved the bright blue colour, which is unusual in a lily.

Aesthetics

The detail,  and textures of the petals and stem buds can be seen quite clearly enhancing the images overall look. The image is a horizontal image. The image was shot using natural light . The image has been shot in colour and edited to B&W for a compare and comparison image.

Strengths
Aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Good composition of image. Close/fine detail in focus.
Weaknesses
The lighting could have been a little bit brighter, which would have enhanced the contrast of the flower, as I feel its a little bit flat, which would give it more depth of field, it is a little bit too close and could have shown more of the flowers as a whole bouquet. they has been a little bit of camera shake.
Improvements required
If I was to take this image again I would add another light source, possibly a flash or a strobe light to enhance the flower, giving it a little more detail . I would set up the flowers in a better arrangement. I would possibly use a softbox to soften the lighting.
Technical
Nikon D5300 -DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40 mm 12.8 G lens.   Normal.  handheld no tripod. Natural light, no other lighting used
Strengths
Good entry based DSLR camera, with a good close up range lens used. this allows for closer shots being taken of the image to bring out and refine the detail of the petals, stems and buds, also good for achieving a better shallow depth of field.
Weaknesses
You do not see all of the image in view as it is not a full frame camera. The image is only sharp in certain areas of the photograph. the image is cropped not showing all of the flowers as a whole.
Improvements required
if I was to shoot this image again I would set my camera setting to ISO 100, for less grain in the shot .40mm focal range, F8, I would use a smaller aperture and change my shutter speed to slow down and control how much light comes into the camera around 1/10 sec to start with. I would also use a tripod to reduce the risk of camera shake.

Buildings used for locations or temporary studios

in film and television
HSE information sheet

Entertainment Information Sheet No 18 (Revision 1)

Introduction

In this information sheet, ‘must’ denotes a legal obligation. Words such as ‘do’, ‘should’ etc are used to give advice on good practice.
This information sheet is one in a series produced in consultation with the Joint Advisory Committee for Entertainment (JACE). It gives advice on the safe use of buildings used as locations or temporary studios in the film and television industries. It does not deal with permanent studios or locations.

Legislation

The main legal requirements covering locations and temporary studios are contained in the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (the Management Regulations).
The Management Regulations require a suitable and sufficient risk assessment to be carried out by employers (or self-employed people) to assess the risk to themselves, their employees and to others who may be affected by their activities, to determine the control measures necessary to avoid risk or reduce it to acceptable levels. Risk assessments should cover the application of any other relevant health and safety legislation, including the requirement to consider fire precautions and emergency procedures.
Depending on the nature of the building and any work that requires to be carried out in preparation for filming, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 (CDM Regulations) may apply. More information on the CDM Regulations can be found in Further reading.

Hazards

Some buildings may be derelict, in poor repair or designed for other functions. This may create risks to the health and safety of people working there, so these risks must be controlled. The use of buildings for location work or studios brings with it a number of potential hazards that may require assessment and control. Typical hazards may include:
■■
unsafe structures;
■■
voids in floors
■■
inadequate fire precautions or means of escape;
■■
unguarded, faulty or derelict machinery;
■■
non-availability of, or poor or unsafe services (eg electricity or water);
■■
hazardous substances or materials, eg asbestos;
■■
debris and litter;
■■
pests or vermin;
■■
lack of welfare facilities;
■■
additional hazards introduced by the production’s activities.
A checklist is included in this information sheet. You do not need to use this but it may assist you in checking locations. There may be hazards present not on the list and not all listed hazards will be present in every location. Where an item on the list is found to be unsatisfactory, you should, if competent, rectify it yourself or seek the advice of an appropriate competent person.

Responsibility

The owner, landlord or agent for the building has a responsibility to:
■■
provide all reasonable information to the producer, including any results of any reports or risk assessments relating to the safety of the building structure, eg presence of asbestos or known weak floors etc;
■■
make sure that all contractual conditions of any lease, contract or agreements are abided by, including having adequate public liability insurance in place.
In many cases, adequate information will be available through the owners or agents for the building; always take advice on the suitability and state of repair of such buildings. If in doubt regarding the safety of any building, seek advice from a suitably qualified structural engineer.
The responsibility for production health and safety rests with the producer, who must make sure that a suitable and sufficient risk assessment is carried out and that the findings are made known to all affected parties. This should cover all stages of the production at the temporary studio, such as recce, construction, setting, filming, striking and reinstatement. The producer should also make sure that any additional control measures beyond those required for a normal set are implemented. These may include:

■■
the employment of competent contractors and specialists;
■■
communication arrangements between all parties involved;
■■
information concerning risk exchanged between all affected parties;
■■
adequate security, emergency and first aid arrangements are made, including for lone workers.
Contractors or specialists, including special effects and stunt artists, need to make sure that:
■■
risk assessments are conducted for the work to be done, taking into account the nature and condition of the location and ensuring that risks are adequately controlled at all stages of the production;
■■
the significant results of their risk assessments are passed on to the producer;
■■
they cooperate with the producer and other contractors.

Control measures

The building structure should be made safe for its intended use. Steps should be taken to ensure walls and roofs cannot fall either wholly or partly. Areas with loose or unstable flooring, unsafe staircases and unprotected edges may need to be repaired to ensure a satisfactory standard or to be clearly indicated as being unsafe and have access prevented or restricted to prevent injury to any person. Access should be prevented to dangerous or redundant areas.
Workplaces are required to have safe means of access and egress. Care should be taken to ensure that all routes for vehicles and those for pedestrians are suitable for the intended traffic and that both can circulate safely.
Adequate illumination should be provided whilst work is being undertaken.

Fire

The risk of fire should not be underestimated and there are numerous ways a fire could start on location. Measures should be taken to minimise the risk of fire which could lead to loss of life or location. Factors involved in starting or perpetuating fire may include:
■■
use of flammable substances;
■■
special and visual effects;
■■
faulty electrical equipment or poor quality wiring within the building;
■■
untreated scenery and dressing;
■■
heaters;
■■
hot work (eg welding or gas burning during construction or setting phases);
■■
poor housekeeping;
■■
smoking.
A fire risk assessment should be carried out to identify any hazards and ensure that adequate precautions are taken to reduce the risk of fire to an acceptable level. The producer must make sure that adequate emergency procedures are in place for the production as a whole and contractors need to make sure that there is adequate control of their activities. Smoking (where allowed by law) should only be permitted in specified areas away from combustible materials. The producer must make sure that:
■■
adequate fire extinguishers are provided given the nature of the location, the type of fire risks present etc and that the crew know their location and how and when to operate them;
■■
a method for alerting all to the outbreak of a fire is in place and known to all;
■■
where there is existing fire detection equipment, that it works and that the production’s activities will not interfere with its safe operation;
■■
an appropriate and suitable evacuation plan is developed to ensure everyone can be safely evacuated from the building. The number and distribution of emergency exits should be adequate, having regard to the premises and the maximum number of people who may be present there at any one time. There should be a means of accounting for everyone on the location at any given time;
■■
where emergency procedures are already in place, that such procedures are suitable and the information is clearly communicated to all parties.
It may be necessary to consult with the local fire brigade if a complex site is in use.
Contractors, such as special effects designers, are to make sure that the need for potential sources of ignition is considered fully when conducting their risk assessments. They should also consider factors that may increase the fire loading of the location, such as storage of large amounts of paper, flammable liquids etc and any potential sources of ignition such as temporary heaters or any hot work being undertaken.

Machinery and equipment

All work equipment used must be suitable for the task and in good working order. Any protective devices, or equipment such as guards, must be fitted and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The producer must make sure, where appropriate, through the contractors employed that all equipment (whether owned or hired) is suitable for the task. They must also make sure it is adequately maintained and, where required, that testing or inspection has been carried out.

Utilities

If it is intended to use the existing utilities, a competent person should make sure that these are compliant with the current standards. Electrical supplies should meet either BS 7671 and/or BS 7909 as appropriate (see Further reading). Gas supplies should preferably meet L56 (see Further reading), or be certificated by an engineer registered on the Gas Safe Register or other organisation approved by the Health and Safety Executive.
There should be an assessment by a competent person or contractor of the electricity, gas and water supply to the building. In many disused buildings, the wiring may be unsafe or unsuitable and stand alone power will need to be provided using a generator, with the obvious attendant risks and controls. Similar controls may be needed for gas supplied from tanks or cylinders.

Hazardous materials

Some locations may contain hazardous materials or substances, for example chemicals, asbestos or microorganisms that could potentially be a risk to people working on the production.
Steps should be taken to control such risks by ensuring these areas are isolated or by safely removing the material from the location. Removal should only be undertaken by specialist waste contractors. Local authorities keep detailed records on land/buildings which are contaminated and may cause harm. Information should be sought from the Environmental Health department of the local authority if you have any concerns over the former use of the land. Removal of any suspect material should only take place after appropriate advice has been obtained.
Asbestos was used widely until the mid-1970s in building applications. Many older buildings may have asbestos within their structures or associated services, eg pipe lagging and the building should be assessed to trace and isolate/make safe any asbestos. Owners and agents for such properties must be able to provide information regarding the presence and condition of any asbestos within the building. Only licensed waste contractors should be used to remove asbestos.
The building should be vacated immediately if it is suspected that loose or disturbed asbestos is present. In this circumstance, the building owner should be advised.
In a building where asbestos has been encapsulated and declared safe by a suitable expert, care should be taken to ensure that the encapsulation is not compromised by the production’s activities, for instance by drilling, cabling etc.

Rubbish and debris

Debris such as broken glass, hypodermic needles, bird droppings and rubbish should be removed by competent contractors before the location is used. If the production requires the appearance of an area badly contaminated with rubbish, debris etc, it should be achieved by dressing.

Vermin

If a building has been infested with pests or vermin, eg pigeons or rats, the risk assessment should consider the possibility of personnel contracting diseases such as psittacosis or weil’s disease (leptospirosis). The building should be thoroughly cleared and cleaned by specialist contractors and staff reminded to maintain scrupulous hygiene standards.

Welfare facilities

Adequate welfare facilities must be provided at all times. The number of people involved and the intended duration of the production will determine the exact nature of these facilities. These include:
■■
toilets;
■■
washing facilities;
■■
clean drinking water;
■■
heating and ventilation;
■■
storage for clothing and possibly the means of drying it;
■■
catering, dining and rest facilities.
All the above facilities can be provided in temporary accommodation such as mobile vehicles.

Use all specialist studio equipment safely. Studio lights use mains electricity, if used incorrectly can cause serious injury or death through electrocution. The photography studio can be a dangerous environment. All personnel must be aware of this and must use the studio in a considerate, responsible and safe manner. Students must:

·         Ensure the lighting unit is switched off before it is plugged into the mains socket.

·         Plug the mains cable into the light unit before plugging into the mains socket.

·         Make sure the light unit is secured firmly to the light stand.

·         Discharge the light unit before switching it off.

·         Ensure electrical cables and sync leads are not causing a trip hazard. Use shortest distances from the electrical unit to the mains socket. Use an extension cable if necessary.

·         Not change bulbs or tamper with electrical equipment.

·         Must ensure that broken or malfunctioning equipment be switched off and disconnected from mains power, then reported to a member of staff (technician and teaching staff).

·         Must not allow personal belongings such as bags/coats etc. to be placed on the floor or be allowed to become a trip hazard.

·         Never consume food or drink in the photo studio or bring food or drink into the photo studio.
